Rawai, on the southern tip, is where a lot of long-stayers and nomads settle: cheaper rooms, a big expat scene, seafood markets and easy boat access — though the beach itself is for launching longtails, not swimming.

Who should pick somewhere else
- Anyone without a scooter. Walkable scores 1/3 — the lowest of the beach areas, and the number that decides this one.
- Anyone expecting to swim from the local beach. It launches longtails; Nai Harn, ten minutes away, is the swimming one.
The best value on the coast, on the condition that you ride. Without a bike the same address becomes the most isolated on this list.

⛔ No minute figures here, deliberately. The published Phuket distance tables contradict each other — one widely copied set puts Karon further from the airport than Kata, which is geographically impossible — and the journey is set by traffic and season rather than by kilometres. So it is a band, plus a Maps link that is correct whenever you open it. The band is also what a living decision turns on: can I do this on a whim, or is it an outing?

What it costs to live here, from someone doing it
⛔ I have not lived in Rawai. The rent and the characteristics above are compiled and labelled researched, and I am not going to write you an atmosphere I have not lived in. What follows is firsthand about living on this island at all — the part that costs the same whichever area you pick. Read it as that, not as local colour.
- The lease I signed: ฿25,000 a month — 1BR, pool + gym, newer block, internet included, furnished, in Phuket Town. Moving in cost ฿50,000 deposit plus the first month, so ฿75,000 before I had slept a night in it, on a 12-month term.The only figure on this site that is not an asking price (signed 12-month lease).
- The places a resident has to reach are on the side with no tourists. Immigration, the transport office and the private hospital sit in or beside Phuket Town, along with the mall that has a real supermarket in it.No beach guide mentions any of it, because a visitor never needs it.
- Being near things did not create trips. Delivery removed them. I live minutes from a big mall and go about six times a year. I set foot in a supermarket roughly once every two months; everything else arrives by app. The only thing I needed within walking distance was a convenience store.The standard advice to live near the shops is mostly spent where delivery works.For Rawai specifically: real shopping rates 1/3 and the errands that come with living somewhere are a planned outing (~20–45 min), so without a scooter the month arrives by app whether you planned it that way or not.
- In the wet months what matters is not having a bike, it is whether the places you go have a roof over the parking. A poncho keeps the rider dry and does nothing for the seat, so you ride home sitting in it.Covered parking at home is worth half of what it sounds like if your destinations have none.
